The Outdoor Classroom

Dr. Montessori taught us to see a spiritual oneness with the child and nature.  She states in "The Montessori Method"  that "man still belongs to nature, and especially when he is a child, he...draws from it the forces necessary to the development of the body and of the spirit.  We have intimate communications with nature which has an influence even a material influence, on the the growth of the body."
In 2009, JMS received a Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to help develop our outdoor educational environment. Funds were used to assist in the development of our rain garden area and our bird and butterfly gardens.  JMS was the recipient of the Bayer Advanced School Garden Awards Grant, using Peace Gardens to Grow Peace.  Our peace garden is located in the front corner of the school.  In addition to the rose bushes, the peace garden is also home to a peace pole, and a bench for quiet reflection.
In 2010, Joliet Montessori School received notification from the Illinois Audubon Society that our school grounds had been approved as a “Certified Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary.”  At that time JMS was the first school in the state of Illinois to receive this certification.  To be eligible, JMS had to demonstrate that we were meeting the following criteria:
1.  Maintain the four elements of habitat:   food, shelter, water, and space
2.  Agree to use a minimal amount of chemicals
3.  Use the grounds to help educate others on the importance of backyard wildlife habitat
Our outdoor environment is an area where the children can not only run and play, but learn in a natural educational environment. It is a prepared environment, in much the same way as a classroom, that gives our children the opportunity to nurture, grow, and explore and experience their outdoor intererests at their own pace.
