Outdoor Educational Environment

An Extension of the Classroom

Over the summer, the JMS community began work on Phase 1 of the Campus Expansion plans. Through the cooperative efforts of the JMS Board of Trustees and the faculty and staff, a course was chartered and an environment created for the children at JMS.  Under the direction of Jeni White, Outdoor Educational Environment chair, volunteers came together to give the playground a major face lift.  The old play jungle gym was removed and a new swing set and play apparatus were installed.

"That's the same play equipment that I played on when I was here, which was over 30 years ago."  said Mark Streitz, JMS alum and current parent volunteer.

Volunteers came out to dig holes, assemble equipment, pull weeds, plant plants and spread mulch. "There is a feeling of community here, and helping the school our children attend makes me a proud parent," said Justin Binns.

Making the outdoor area a true extension of the classroom came from the very diligent efforts of Mrs. White and her outdoor expansion committee.  Each directress and director was given the opportunity for feedback and input on what would be meaningful to the children.  Working with the faculty and adhering to the Montessori principles as well as the limitations placed by ComEd, that generously allows us to use their easement.  Jeni and her team became very creative in seeking alternatives and solutions to the suggestions presented.

"This has really been a team effort," stated Mrs. White.  She added that, besides our volunteer families, help on the project came in many forms, especially from JMS grandfather Terry Jacobs, our friends at the Bicentennial Park and grants from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Bayer Corporation.

Phase 2 will involve the rehab of the house next door, a gazebo and further improvements to the playground.

The outdoor environment is quickly becoming an area where the children can not only run and play, but learn in a natural educational environment.
